Wipro is planning to invest huge sum for setting up a separate business practice for open source. For this, the company devices to have at least 10,000 strong team determined by the massive changes in the technological space and few of its major clients like Citigroup, which work largely up on non-proprietary software.

By adopting this practice of open source, Wipro, the third-largest software exporter will be able to bring down its operating costs by up to 20 per cent within next two years. It would also help them with faster implementation of the projects.

During last week, while announcing Wipro's second quarter results, CEO TK Kurien mentioned that they’ve been making investments to develop advisory capability and also for creation of IP to gain impressive stature in this space.

The open source practice of Wipro has been developed under its Business Application Services division, by which company aims at developing open source platform to enable online services across a large scale. Wipro will now reportedly shift its focus to applications, infrastructure, involving databases, cloud technologies, operating systems and software defined infrastructure

There are number of companies which are increasingly deploying open source technology in an order to fulfil their information technology requirements and thereby removing the high licesing costs and vendors charges. The Open source technology has helped in improving the IT application adaptability and have also assisted in slashing down the costs and thereby forcing the homegrown companies like TCS and Infosys to improve their open source offerings.

The founder of the industry's first strategic consultancy think-tank on Open Source, Andrew Aitken said that the two major reasons in addition to cost saving behind adaption of open source platform were to increase deployment of cloud models, analytics and Internet of Things (IoT), and other being the legacy passage from traditional proprietary vendors to open source.
